Named after the 18th century “Gentleman Pirate” that moored his vessel the royal James on the nearby Cape Fear River, the regatta is an annual sailboat race and pirate festival that coincides with Halloween.
Dressed in pirate regalia, the crews of each vessel hoist their pirate flag firing water cannons and water pistols. Captain and crew jockey for position in a mock battle to create an exciting start for all spectators. Following the race an awards ceremony and party featuring food drinks and live entertainment is fun for all.
